WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH


Founder’s Studio, Bain’s corporate venture studio, identifies, builds and scales the best new business ideas from both inside and outside of the firm. Founder’s Studio focuses on turning professional services methodology and client needs into software product that can constitute attractive businesses.


The Founder’s Studio will support typically 4-6 ventures simultaneously to develop their ideas targeting to spin-off 2-3 of them any given year. Each venture will be incubated for a period of ~6 months before being potentially spun out from Bain or “folding” (in the “fold” case all the know-how created in the incubation period needs to be available for the Founder’s Studio and for the Practices involved). 


The key stages of the Founder’s Studio are:

    Pre-Incubation (idea selection and ideas validation)

    Incubation

o    Concept

o    Prototype

o    MVP

o    Spin-out (Series Seed funding round)

o    Growth

o    External funding (Series A funding round)


WHERE YOU’LL FIT WITHIN THE TEAM 


The Head of Technology will lead a team of engineers (both in-house and from services vendors) comprising Founder’s Studio’s engineering group. You are an established full-stack engineer lead who is ready for the challenge of leading a team of in-house and externally contracted engineers to deliver cutting edge next generation products in an entrepreneurial environment.


WHAT YOU’LL DO 


  • Lead a team of 5-20 internal and external engineers (UI, Data Engineering, Machine Learning and Backend).
  •  Lead recruiting, hiring, onboarding, staffing, and professional development for the engineering team (with support from Engine 2 Recruiting and HR teams).
  •  Work closely with Founder’s Studio Partner and Head of Studio to inform and participate in important decisions about the Founder’s Studio portfolio, such as venture selection, persevere/pivot/perish, and key personnel decisions.
  • Co-ordinate and manage external vendors providing technical services, including ensuring high quality and productive work product
  • Set high standards in the software development, build and deployment processes on AWS infrastructure
  • Be ready to roll up your sleeves to architect business applications leveraging the latest architectural paradigms. 
  •   Build a culture where you lead by example with your technology expertise solving challenging software development problems.
  • Work with the engineering teams to develop customer facing applications, predictive models, data services & platform services
  •  Co-ordinate real-time troubleshooting and operational response to incidents and outages and keeping tabs on post-release metrics
  • Supervise and coach on all aspects of software & Infrastructure engineering project roadmaps, resource allocation, and execution
  •  Be the expert on how to best use Micro Services based architecture, cloud technologies, deal with large scales datasets and apply appropriate ML tools and platforms. 
  •  Be a topic expert on database technologies, data management platforms to design, build, operate & scale our next-generation products
  •  Co-ordinate and facilitate communication between our in-house and external application, machine learning and infrastructure teams

ABOUT YOU

Education

  • Required : Bachelors in Computer Science
  • Preferred: Masters in Computer Science or related fields


Experience

  • Required: 10+ years in the software development/engineering roles with a minimum of 3+ years of leading and managing engineering teams.
  • Experience with providing technical vision, driving strategy and successfully executing across proprietary and open source technologies 
  • Have a background in modern software development, familiar with current standards and cloud based, developer tools sets for CI/CD in delivering a comprehensive SDLC such as GitHub, GitOps, Jenkins, Docker
  • Experience delivering large-scale secure, stable, scalable, and observable cloud based micro service based solutions 
  • In-depth, hands-on knowledge of Python
  • Experience with ETL pipelines
  • Experience utilizing big data and machine learning technologies (e.g. H2O, Spark, Hadoop, Cassandra).
  • Experience with workflow management platforms like Airflow
  • Experience with distributed systems and backend service development
  • Experience working with services vendors
  • Natively holds a "bias for action", is results oriented, data driven having the ability to shape and influence decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  with the ability to represent and advocate complex technical concepts
  • Excellent ability to work collaboratively with distributed cross-functional teams
  • Comfortable in a less structured, fast paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques and natural language processing (e.g. featurization, n-gram analysis, supervised classification and unsupervised topic clustering, etc)
  • Experience with building out cloud infrastructure or using AWS services (e.g. Sagemaker, Infra tools, etc)

Knowledge and Skills

Required

  • Cloud native technology background
  •  Must have shipped SaaS software

Preferred

  • Experience in a startup as an entrepreneur or an early employee as an engineering lead/manager
